Estimated Samurai Rotation Potency Changes

TLDR: Potency is VERY similar to 7.01 Samurai, arguably stronger in a vacuum and weaker in practice depending on party composition and execution. Significant potency was moved from their burst to their basic rotation. Samurai's AOE was also significantly buffed.

As a fan of Samurai, I was curious how much the Tsubame-Gaeshi changes effected Samurai's two minute rotation as a whole, so I did a very basic calculation of Samurai's DPS rotation.

For those who haven't read the patch notes, Samurai's Tsubame-Gaeshi was unchained from Meikyo Shisui, but unlike Endwalker Samurai it is now is always available. This came at the cost of several of Samurai's skill potencies being reduced across the board.

Here's my general thoughts:

  • Overall when played optimally this is technically a potency buff (~65-70 per 2 minutes), however it is very negligible compared to Samurai's damage.
  • In theory the changes do allow Samurai to scale better with skill speed, as your basic rotation has more power. However with the increased length of Samurai's rotation it will take longer on average to complete a basic rotation.
  • These changes reduce your average Kenki and Meditation Stack generation by a slight amount. Those damage changes were factored in.
  • This DOES NOT account for any buffs from the party or Samurai itself. While it's hard to say for certain, a lot of the potency was moved from Samurai's 1/2 minute Instants (Hissatsu: Senei / Zanshin). So while it is a net dps gain overall, in any environment with raid buffs this is likely a nerf
  • Specifically, Samurai's current 2 minute burst receives no direct improvements as their burst is very tight as is, as a result they're likely losing somewhere around 230 potency from their burst window. Maybe there's some secret tech that this can utilize the Tsubame-Gaeshi changes during buffs but that seems unlikely due to Tendo's/Higanbana's necessity in burst.
  • Despite that, game-feel wise it's still very nice to have Tsubame-Gaeshi on demand. Samurai's damage should feel more "consistent" during non burst phases.
  • This slows down Samurai's casts per minute, as they have slightly less Shohas/Hissatsu: Shintens to execute.
  • Samurai's non-Tenkai AOE was untouched, meaning Samurai got a significant AOE potency buff! Samurai's basic rotation is now a gain on 2 (+51)! The Tenkai version is still only a gain on 3.
  • The Tenkai-Goken nerf offsets the AOE gain somewhat, but the sustained damage should be noticeable, especially for those not using burst in trash pulls and during longer pulls.
  • Optimization will likely come down to maximizing the amount of BRs you can fit into a fight, again potentially giving Samurai more value from skill speed.
  • I should've said standard rotation instead of basic rotation, but I'm too lazy to change it now.

Feel free to point out if I missed or misinterpreted anything but I believe this covers all of Samurai's OCGDs and effected instants.
