One of the things I like the least about FFXIV is that there are no skill trees, no swappable abilities, no in-job weapon options, etc. Especially coming from ESO and GW2 one of the most fun aspects of these games was tinkering with my build. That also made clearing content again and again much more fun, because you could change up your build each time. It was also kind of a way to distinguish between people who knew their class and who don't, because people who played their class for a long time knew where to make little adjustments to their build to overcome a fight.
Builds also let you change up a class to your wants: If I pick a Thief in GW2 he can be a sniper, jump around with a staff, be the typical cloaking dagger thief, wield a sword to be more in your face or pump you full of lead with his bullets. Or you can be anything in between, because you can mix and match everything.
If I pick a Rogue in FFXIV and I'm not a fan of the whole Ninja aestetic? Well then I'm kinda fucked. I can change my glamour of course, but I'm always going to Naruto-Run and throw Jutsus.
As someone who played a lot of WoW in the past (It's been a few years but still) it's mind-boggling to me that classes are hardlocked into dungeon-roles. That there are classes that can only tank, only heal or only dps is so restrictive. In WoW every class can go dps, most can do two roles and some can do all three. It brings with it it's own problems, like having to cart around three gear sets, but it also means that you can have more variety when farming dungeons.
The comparison with WoW is important here because FFXIV wants to be a direct competitor to WoW.
I know that some of these problems are solved by having every job available to one character and that is a very good thing. As someone who always had a char of every class in every MMO I've played, I consider having every class on my one char to maybe be the best thing about FFXIV. But it doesn't change the problem that someone might really like thematic of the Gunbreaker but doesn't enjoy tanking. Or that someone wants to play an actually full-support/healer Bard or Dancer and not DPS with a couple of Buffs.
Anyway, I still like FFXIV and I'll keep playing it but I would enjoy it way more if I had more options of making my character really play and feel like I want him to.
What do you guys think about it? Do you miss character building or do you actually like that everyone else's PLD plays 100% like yours?
