[discussion] Advice For New, Returning, Or Switching Players

I've been leveling my other classes lately, slowly working my way to having them all at 80, and while farming dungeons I've noticed there's a lot of new players who are either new to MMOs or just new to FF and don't seem to know certain dungeon etiquette or even some basics about playing their classes. I want to give anyone who's new to the game a little help, and I'm inviting anyone else to do the same, as well!

To that end, here are a few things I've been seeing during my dungeon runs, and how you should handle them:

If you're pulling a pack of enemies, pull them a bit further so they group up next to you instead of spreading around you.

I've been seeing a lot of tanks, even non-new players, standing in the middle of their enemies all in a circle around them. Don't do this! This might seem a strange piece of dungeon etiquette, but there's a good reason I say this. When you pull a pack and stand in the middle of them all, you're spreading them further out and aiming damage at the middle. This means that if a melee dps wants to hit all the adds on big pulls with their AOE, they have to stand in the middle where you are, where it's harder to see ground markers and where they can get hit by enemies that have unmarked AOE damage. It can also be a problem for ranged dps, though less often.

Don't drag bosses around the battlefield.

I've seen several tanks running around pulling bosses with them all around the battlefield. Unless you need to move the boss for a mechanic or you need to dodge damage, don't unnecessarily drag the boss around. Your melee dps shouldn't have to chase you around because you're running around in circles for some reason. Pick a spot, plant your feet, and move as needed.

Tanks facing bosses towards the party.

Don't do this. It should be common knowledge to turn bosses away from your party, but I've been seeing quite a few tanks just pulling them and then standing with their party. Many bosses have cleaves or AOE tankbusters that will kill your party members. Face bosses away from your party.

Healers and DPS standing near the tank on boss fights.

This is bad for the same reasons as listed above. You might get yourself killed. I've seen it happen a lot these past two weeks. If you're not the tank, don't stand in front of the boss.

If you buy a level skip, please still take the time to learn your class.

I encountered an AST today who did zero DPS, constantly ran around in circles, and spammed every single ability with no idea of what they do. Please don't be like this and button mash. You don't have to be the best player ever, but at least try to learn your class basics so you're contributing instead of being the BLM yesterday who only casted Fire, Fire 3, and Bliz 3 in a level 73 dungeon (I'm not mad at you, but you did almost get us killed on Griaule.) Button mashing doesn't work in this game for the most part. Most DPS classes have rotations and specifically timed cooldowns. Healers should try to help DPS, which means optimizing your heals. Tanks need to keep up aggro to keep the party from taking hits, and you don't want to accidentally turn off your tank stance while button mashing. It's just a bad time all around. Please please please please learn your class.

Try to be polite to your party members and look up mechanics or ask for advice on bosses in later dungeons, especially if you're a tank or healer.

Early dungeons you can easily go in blind, have fun, and get a clear, but a lot of the expansion dungeons have mechanics that will insta-kill you, which means your healer has to pick you up, or (worse) if you are the healer, then you've probably doomed your whole party to a wipe. We've wiped in almost every dungeon I've been running lately because new players are just standing in AOEs or inside mechanics that end up killing them, especially healers. I shouldn't have to say this, but dodge AOEs.

If there are 3+ enemies, use your AOE skills.

Big pulls go much, much slower if you're single targeting them all down. Resources aren't a problem when it comes to doing AOE damage anymore (unless you're a RDM; I'm so sorry RDM mains), so go AOE crazy.

Non-Dungeon Tips

If you need to go to the Waking Sands during ARR, don't teleport to Horizon.

Go to Limsa, take the Arcanists' Guild aethernet point, and talk to the person beside the gate next to the guild to take the ferry to Vesper Bay.

If you need to go to Isari in Stormblood, don't teleport to anywhere in the Ruby Sea.

Teleport to Namai in Yanxia and go through the eastern gate to enter Isari directly.

If you want to level your crafters and gatherers and you have access to Ishgard, take advantage of the Ishgard's Restoration to level.

Crafters can take advantage of it at level 20, and gatherers can take advantage of the Diadem there at level 10 (I think, don't quote me on this.)

If you want to be a self-sufficient crafter, level your gatherers first.

You can gather your own mats and save yourself a lot of gil. The only exception is Fishing, which isn't needed for the most part for your crafters (there are exceptions.)

Pace yourself.

This is a huge game and there's a lot to do when you first start out, so don't rush into everything and burn yourself out. Take your time, enjoy the content, and have fun. Don't feel like you have to do absolutely everything.

It's fine to call it Bluefrog.

Everyone does it.

If you're coming from WoW, don't stress about what class to play.

In FF you can play absolutely everything on one class, which means you only have to unlock things and go through the story once. If you feel like it though, you can review cutscenes in Inn rooms (or play it again with the New Game + feature.)

Does anyone else have any helpful tips they'd like to give new players?
