That's what they called the virus the resistance made that kills the visiters. They dumped it worldwide so it covered the whole globe.

And then in the TV series that I deny happened, for some reason it didn't take hold like planned in some areas (I'm thinking LA was in the non red dust area) and so the Lizards kept a toe (or claw) hold.

The Dust Bowl here in Oklahoma was pretty widely known, but it hasn't been an issue here for ages. And even that was mostly in the western part of the state. The NE corner is sooo much nicer. Actual hills, trees, and lakes!
