Unique Titles - The number of titles given out that were not duplicates.
Out of Total - The percentage of titles given out that were not duplicates.
So over the past week, I've seen a few posts regarding skybuilder rankings where players were frustrated about other players ranking multiple times and getting duplicate titles, effectively "stealing" titles away from other players. Of course it's a frustrating thought, but how big of a problem is this really? Well, I set out to find out, mashed a bunch of numbers together, and I have some answers for you!
First the big question, was the Saint title really stolen? Actually only 15% of titles obtained were duplicates, meaning for every 12 players getting a title, 10 of them were first-time title recipients. That's great!
Beatus of the Firmament is a different story. Of the titles available, just shy of half were claimed by someone who already had the title. On a few servers, we even saw that number cross over that 50% line. Owch!
If you take out all the duplicates, what do the high scores really look like? Well it's actually pretty clean. Rank 1-10 as Saint, Rank 11-50 as Beatus without duplicates looks nearly the same as rank 1-12 as Saint, Rank 13-100 as Beatus with duplicates.
Finally, between servers the variance was relatively small. For the Beatus titles 49-58% were claimed, while for Saint titles 76-92% were claimed. We can also see that these seem to be normally distributed, meaning that most servers are close to the average, and only a few servers are outliars. In short, larger servers didn't have drastically different results from smaller servers.
My Thoughts
Overall I don't think the duplicate titles are doing too much to hurt the high scores. There are at least a few occurrences of someone being bumped out of the top 12, but most are going to player who haven't received it in the past. The barrier to enter the top 100 is reasonable too, being accessible to anyone with up-to-date gear and willing to put in a few hours of work, while preventing people from just getting a title without really participating.
Something I'd like to see in the future would be "locking in" a crafting and gathering job for seasonal score during their first turn-in, so that players have to pick two rankings to participate in instead of claiming up to 11 slots each season.
I'd love to hear your thoughts!
