Controller Fellows: How Do You Deal With D-pad Use While Running?

I've been back and forth on this problem, and I wanted to hear how others have solved this.

The problem: You're running, and therefore pushing the left analog stick with your left thumb. You need to press the D-pad, because you have to change party selection to someone whose taken damage, or you have a necessary ability assigned there. How do you make this press without lifting up your left thumb and causing your character to stop running? This assuming you're not in a situation where auto-run works, like evading AoE or something like that.

If you use a controller you surely have been in this situation. Now the easier solution is to use a pad with a D-pad on the inside, like Xbox or Switch Pro. This lets us reach our right thumb over and make any necessary presses. But what about players who are using PlayStation style controllers where the D-pad is on the far side, and therefore out of reach by the right thumb?

I was thinking of making some special steam configurations where I can press start/select as up/down, and they long press as start/select so you don't lose access to your menus.

Alternatively, you could make a steam config in which you hold down L3 stick click, which is a mode change so the face buttons become the d-pad. This doesn't seem ideal though.
