Wow, did 2.1 change a lot. For starters, they added three new cutscenes. One was used to replace the earring quest where we were shown to be given rest and Minfilia came to us to let us know Alphinaud wanted to talk, one with Slafborn where he let us know that we were trusted enough to not be given menial tasks and where our headquarters is, and one where Slafborn tells us how to start the Crystal Tower raid and the game informs us that it is mandatory.
Along with the new cutscenes, basically all of the junk "kill these things" quests were cut out entirely or altered. Most notably is All Things in Time which changed to have us talk to F'lhammin and then the game fades out and fades back in with us in the hallway to the Waking Sands. No killing anything and we don't even have to teleport ourselves to Vesper Bay.
2.1 used to be "Padding the patch", but now it is super unpadded and focused on the plot. I actually enjoyed the patch and story because of it. Change in pacing doesn't even begin to describe this great change; 2.1 is no longer the worst patch in the game.
Especially because we don't have to do Qarn or gather tea leaves. For a comparison 3.1 has 8 quests, 4.1 has 11 quests, and 5.1 has 10 quests. 2.1 is now at the same amount as the rest of the game in this instance.
