I'm not sure how popular the chocobo companion is - since it's only really useful for leveling in the overworld (and possibly beast tribe questing?) - but has anybody heard anything about the potential to expand the Companion system beyond just chocobos since the system first rolled out?
I did find something suggesting that Yoshida wants the Magitek Armor as a companion... but Google seems to have failed me beyond that, and obviously that idea never came about.
There seem to be a lot of mounts in the game that could serve as effective companions. I wouldn't expect every mount to be included, but I think the beast tribe mounts would be a good route to take. They could start with just the ARR beast tribes, then expand it once they've got things figured out.
These mounts all seem to already exist as regular monsters in the overworld here and there already, after all, and many do have their own abilities to borrow from even. The Ixal Direwolf. The Amal'jaa Cavalry Drake. The Sahagin Cavalry Elbst. The Sylph Laurel Goobbue.
Okay, maaaaaybe not the Bomb Palanquin from the Kobolds... but 4 out of 5 ain't bad. The 789th is far too lazy and craven to train anything for combat anyways.
In general, I'd expect that to be a good fit for being companions the mounts would also need to exist in some form as an overworld monster and be something we could functionally train. (No combat manacutters)
Many of them already do have a basic design concept for their abilities from said overworld monsters, which would make designing their abilities less work. The hard part would be trying to include customization (i.e. recoloring them the way we do with our bird buddies, let alone any "barding" system) - but I'd be happy with just the basic version with no customization.
Alternatively: I've noticed some faint rumblings that the expected (but not announced so far, naturally) Beastmaster Limited Job may instead be the route they take, rather than adding more companions. Chocobos would be everybody's buddy option, but players who want to collect a bunch of different trained beast pals could do so through a Limited Job. That would probably work out for the better, even, giving more freedom to abilities and how much they're controlled.
