So this has been a sore subject for a long time, from what I understand.
The chat tabs are limited to four. PC users might have mods to work around this, but console players are left out in the cold.
So what are you to do? As of now, you basically have to glob together filters of a like nature, and just struggle along.
Currently I've got my four set up like this:
#1: All general chats, Party chat, Alliance chat
#2: Battle and Crafting
#3: Event-Related
#4: FC, Linkshell, and Crossworld Linkshell
It works well enough. But it is still a bit frustrating. Different situations call for different setups.
I've been thinking about this for a while now, but why can't we get a system like HUD has? I mean, HUD gets four slots you can save different setups to. I use it myself and it's on my 1st Cross Hotbar slot as macros. To quickly swap between Layout 1 and Layout 2.
Given that this framework is already in place, couldn't it be commandeered to offer a similar system for the Chat Box?
Four slots, that allow you to customize the tabs and filters at the very least, I'm not sure about changing notification sounds or chat colors, because that might get confusing.
However, just the tabs and filters alone would be a HUGE leap forward in what could be done here. Since you use different things in different situations.
Imagine a setup like this.
#1 The HUB / Craft Chat
Tab 1 could be Say, Emotes, things of this nature.
Tab 2 could be your Synthesis-related stuff.
Tab 3 could be your Free Company
Tab 4 could be your Linkshells.
#2 The Dungeon/Raid Chat
Tab 1 for your Party
Tab 2 for Battle stuff.
Tab 3 for Events.
Tab 4 for Alliance chat.
This is a somewhat barebones setup, of course. But if nothing else, with this option available, people could better customize those four tabs to be useful based on the situations they are in. Rather than having to try to cram stuff together and make the best of things.
Along with the idea, naturally some new macro functions would be helpful. The ability to macro switch, just like the /hudlayout commands. This way if you switch your HUD for different situations, you could also switch your chat box setting at the same time.
