Greetings everyone!
So, been talking to people across various forums/comments sections, and about gaming in such lately, and I remembered something from early in my FFXIV experience.
In older MMOs, I'd cast buffs on people I ran into out in the field. I read recently one of the old Bliz devs noticed people doing this in WoW Classic and how it's an awesome thing (even though they more or less took that out over time), and remembered my early days in FFXIV. Back then, we DID have a castable buff, albeit one that wouldn't last long for most people, Stoneskin.
...and being one of those insufferably nice guys you find in games, I cast it on literally everyone I came across.
But I also remember reading a post early on in the forums that went something to the effect of this: We want FFXIV to have a healthy and happy and friendly community, and not become toxic like some games are. So I'm calling on healers to cast a Cure/Physics (this was before HW) on everyone they see. Make Eorzea a nice, friendly place for people to visit and think of it as a friendly wave or hello!
I started playing the patch before NIN was released, so that should give you some idea of how long ago this was, but the idea has stuck with me ever since, and was one of the first things I saw about FFXIV's community that had me think it was different than WoW's, the MMO I was coming from at the time.
In any case, I think it was a good initiative, and would invite people to do it again.
So next time you see someone in the field, cast a Cure/Physic/Benefic/Clemency/Vercure on them, or if you're not a class with a heal, throw a "/wave", "/greet", "/salute", "/bow" their way. You never know, maybe you'll make someone else's first Eorzian experience a welcoming one!
...maybe I'm just a silly, mushy person, but I think it made for a friendly community, and would love to see it again. Who's with me?
EDIT: I should note, some people say only old school games where you have a server reputation and can be blacklisted encourage people to be good people. But I don't believe that has to be true. I don't think people need a threat of ostracism to be nice. And I think the FFXIV community is one of the nicest around. I think, of all MMO communities, this is the kinda thing we can do without being forced to, just because we want a friendly Eorzea. Maybe it's just me, but I'll be doing my part. ^_^
