Blu Opener & Moon Flute Usage - The Math, The Myth, The Legend

I know what you're thinking... "Blue Mage doesn't need an opener, they have no rotation". Well, I'm here to correct that. While they really don't have a traditional rotation, they absolutely do have an opener that should be used if you're playing in a DPS role.

So, let's get right into it and then break it all down. I've included all Potencies so that anyone can feel free to double check me down in the comments. We're working with a 2.4s GCD, though most BLU will probably find themselves around 2.35s if they are in full Shire Gear.

  • 5s Pre-Pull / Bristle - Buffs Song of Torment
  • 2s Pre-Pull / Moon Flute - 50% Increased Damage for 15s
  • 0s Swiftcast
  • 0.7s GCD / Song of Torment - 550 Potency DOT + 50% Bristle Buff
  • 1.7s J-Kick - 300 Potency + Gap Closer
  • 3.1s GCD / Devour - 250 Potency
  • 4.1s Mountain Buster - 400 Potency
  • 5.5s GCD / Magic Hammer - 250 Potency
  • 6.5s Glass Dance - 350 Potency
  • 7.9s GCD / Sharpened Knife - 220 Potency
  • 8.9s Feather Rain - 300 Potency
  • 10.3s GCD / Sharpened Knife - 220 Potency
  • 11s Surpanakha - 200 Potency
  • 11.7s Surpanakha 2 - 300 Potency
  • 12.4s Surpanakha 3 - 400 Potency
  • 13.1s Surpanakha 4 - 500 Potency
  • 13.8s GCD / Sharpened Knife - 220 Potency
    • This final Knife is extremely hard to pull off, it's entirely dependent on latency and movement. It's possible, but don't count on it. For all of my calculations, I won't be including it.

Time for the math... Moon Flute gives you +50% Damage Boost for 15s, but you can't take any actions for the next 15s. This means you need to gain 7 GCDs worth of Potency during that 15s. Since each GCD is worth 220 Potency, that means we need to gain 1540 Potency from the buffs alone.

412+150+125+200+125+175+110+150+110+100+150+200+250 = 2257 Potency from Moon Flute

2257 - 1540 = 717 Potency Gain from using Moon Flute

6711 / 6055 = 11% Damage Buff from Moon Flute over 30s

Now, that 11% Damage Buff figure is actually on the low-end. I specifically ignored any extra factors that actually work in your favor. Off-Guard, Condensed Libra, Crits and Direct Hits will further increase that % since all of those factors would essentially be buffed by Moon Flute as well.

**MOON FLUTE EVERY MINUTE*\*

This is one of the theories floating around that using Moon Flute every minute is the best way to use it. There's a few factors at play here. You lose Magic Hammer, Glass Dance, since they are not up every minute, but you do gain a GCD action since Surpanakha chews up a GCD because of it's duration. Also, you're using Surpanakha at 2 charges to squeeze in the extra damage.

So, let's math it out in the same way. Numbers that are bold are changes from the above opener.

412+150+125+200+110+0+110+150+110+100+150+110 = 1727 Potency from Moon Flute

1727- 1540 = 187 Potency Gain from using Moon Flute

5181 / 4995 = 4% Damage Buff for Moon Flute over 30s

This is a DPS gain to use it every minute if you're only looking at the minute that it happens in. However, for long term use, it's a DPS loss when you compare it the math below.

**MOON FLUTE EVERY TWO MINUTES*\*

Similar to above, but this time we get to retain Surpanakha. Magic Hammer and Glass Dance still won't sync up until the 6 minute point, so we're just not including them in these calculations.

412+150+125+200+110+0+110+150+110+100+150+220+250 = 2067 Potency from Moon Flute

2067 - 1540 = 527 Potency Gain from using Moon Flute

6201 / 5675 = 9% Damage Buff from Moon Flute over 30s

**YOUR SURPANAKHA MATH IS WRONG*\*

I already know this is going to be the first comment if I don't included this. The buff from using Surpanakha is a stacking buff, just like Greased Lightning and Embolden. It's additive for itself. That means the second hit gets +50% damage, third hit is +100% Damage, and the final hit is +150% Damage. It does not multiple with every hit.

If it did multiply, the final hit would be dealing well over triple the damage of the first hit. Feel free to test this out yourself.
