Hello everyone,
Like presumably a lot of other dedicated BLM fans I am hurting over the loss of our nonstandard gameplay and the current implementation of how BLM works in a number of ways. I wanted to create a post discussing procs specifically, because I feel like these would be the easiest features to change that would significantly improve how the job feels to play.
These proposed adjustments are intended to be in-line with their philosophy of forcing the standard rotation. Currently I believe freely using t3p/f3p/xenoglossy for movement is basically a noob trap as, beyond simply performing your rotation correctly and not dropping casts, pretty much the entirety of black mage's dps optimization lies in af1f3p usage (which often requires xenoglossy usage, thus restricting their capacity of being a bankable mobility tool) and making sure you neither clip nor drift thunder dot. Basically, all of black mage's optimization comes at the cost of heavily restricting how they get to use their mobility tools.
Now, onto my proposed changes:
1) Change fire 3 proc into an unaspected spell. Currently, af1f3p is still a nominal gain - even more so than in endwalker, as fire 3 got a potency buff in dawntrail - and because of the removal of ice paradox we have to expend limited resources (namely, xenoglossy) in order to get af1f3p, which ends up eating up a lot of our bankable mobility.
2) Either revert t3p changes, or redesign in in such a way that the "procs" are deterministic. I think endwalker thunder procs on their own would be sufficiently accessible as you aren't juggling between the decision of using sharpcast to garuntee thunder or fire procs, and my belief is that having some way of thunder doing its full dot as instant direct damage is important if the intention is to have thunder procs be a form of mobility tool as otherwise you lose a ton of potency for clipping/drifting it given the backloaded nature of current thunder.
There's definitely a lot of other things I think warrant changes about current black mage but I think these changes would make it easier to approach for newcomers and also open up design space to allow black mage to optimize their gameplay in other, more interesting ways. Part of this mindset is also coming from picto and holy in white - namely, holy in white is NOT a gain, and is in-line with the potency of their filler combo. It's fine to overcap white paint as it's purely a bankable mobility tool that allows you to keep uptime.
Any discussion about the topic would be welcome - these are more preliminary thoughts as I've only been a 100 BLM for a few days at the time of this post, so it's possible I change my perspective of its current implementation in the future (though I doubt it lol)
