Hey there folks. Just something thats been milling around in my head for some time since I started up XIV back in May. The lack of a pet class for a physical side of things. I have started playing Summoner very recently and while Im enjoying it, theres something I miss from my old days in Warcraft playing a hunter where I have my animal companion beside me as we fight against the targets, either through ranged combat or more recently in melee.
That said, I have seen comments of people mentioning that Yoshi P doesnt like pet classes and the balance around them, but for me thats only on the assumption that every pet has to be different which to me doesnt have to be the case.
This post isnt intended to be an armchair developer of "This is how they should do it" or anything like that. Just my personal thoughts on how they could do it, if they chose to go the route of Beast Mastery in the future.
These are just some things that come to mind when I started pondering what I'd like to see for a Beast Master / Tamer in FFXIV.
1 - Have it be the one pet, but any changes to the pet to make it look different are cosmetic in glamours. Similar to what they did for Summoner Egis and Carbuncles, I feel that having the changes to pets being purely cosmetic would be much easier on the development team than simply making pet families. Just have the attacks be a bit vague in the names of their attack rather than stuff like "Claw" or "Peck".
2 - The pet acts similar to the Egis and is not targettable, instead acting as something for you to use abilities to make it do attacks with. Unlike Summoner however most of the Beast Masters attacks focus around the pet moreso than the Summoners own spells. Sure, the Beast Master would have some of its own attacks that exist, but they would also incorporate the pet. Something like a flanking strike sort of situation. Perhaps tie it to a combo where you alternate the hits between master and pet with a final co-ordinated strike as the ender.
3 - An all around pet I feel would be a good way to introduce the Beast Master came to me shortly after buying the FFX/X-2 remaster. Daigoro. What if the Beast Masters primary pet before any glamours was Daigoro, Yojimbo's dog. Since the events of Stormblood, Daigoro is mostly there for flavour for the Gold Saucer event, but as of the moment he is on his own. Could easily tie in a storyline of how we go to Kugane at lvl70 or whatecer and find that a greedy dog has been causing mischief, and when we go find him we help him out against some enemies, form a bond and a pact of sorts. Maybe the max level quest involves a semi-reunion of Yojimbo and Daigoro, but for the time being Yojimbo simply asks for you to look after him. Plus, a Victory emote would be cute of Daigoro doing tricks for gold coins.
Anyways, just a small ramble to get the idea out of my head. While Im sure if Square and Yoshi ever did implement the Beast Master class it will likely be wildly different than whats in my own head for it, this is simply how to me I think could be fun for the players, easier on the dev team and generally a bit easier to balance a pet than the Egis. Feel free to disagree with me in the comments below about why certain points I have wouldnt work, I welcome the critique!
