So I have only been playing for about a week now. I believe I bought the complete edition at the beginning of the month with a mix of interest and reservation. As a bit of background, I have long stayed away from FFXIV for years. I had almost exclusively played WoW (as I feel many have), and there were many things (as I have now been noticing as misconceptions) that turned me away from the game, even with having a few RL friends constantly trying to recruit me to the game. When I did eventually give it a try about a year ago with whichever the trial version was, I got lost in one of the major cities, got frustrated, and then stopped. However, as my desire to continue playing WoW has been waning, and more persistence from my friends to try out this MMO (as they have been needing a tank), I decided to bite the bullet another time, and begin this experience anew. All I can say, as the title suggest, is wow.
Immediately, my experience changed from what I remembered. Upon heeding the advice of my friends to just focus on the MSQ and Job Quest (I am currently a Marauder), I found myself more easily navigating the area, and before I knew it I put in one sitting roughly 8 hours of play. Upon level 15, I jumped into my first dungeon to something I did not expect. This community, unlike that of my aforementioned MMO, is shockingly helpful and kind. Immediately upon stating I was new, the group told me not to worry, explained the basics of the dungeon and showed me the path to best complete it. I was left speechless. This had to have been just a freak chance. Surely this is not how everyone is? Oh how delightfully I was wrong.
Every dungeon, players would see that two leaf sprout next to my name and ask if it was my first time in the dungeon, or rather, duty. They have all been patient, taking their time, and not immediately wishing to kick me should I have messed up a mechanic or went a wrong direction. Even while leveling, players would come by, sometimes many levels higher, and assist me in quests. In almost every zone I found nice, compassionate players who some I began to notice in my journey.
The part I believe that was the most pleasant to me (while avoiding spoilers) was the last unskippable Main Scenario the Praetorium. The group made note I was new and welcomed me with open arms, explaining pathing and everything else. When I asked about mechanics, the other tank told em to go ahead and turn off my Defiance, to just relax and enjoy the story. Over the hour that took place, we were able to defeat all the bosses to a very cool ending, with players congratulating me and welcoming me in to the post ARR game (even though I am only halfway through the 100 or so quest before the first expansion, and if any of those players were in that Scenario and remember an Alexandris Shadewind, you are all the best).
Only a slightly over a week in this new game, a game I wrote off for YEARS, I have felt more welcomed, guided and felt more kindness than I have felt in WoW in a very, VERY long time outside of guild activities. I have never felt so glad to be wrong about something before in my life. Are there things about the game that are still hard to get used to? Yeah. Are the ARR quest a bit annoying. Some most definitely. Am I going to continue playing through to Shadowbringers and beyond? So far I can answer with a very certain YES.
So I wanted to just write this out as my observations and feelings after only playing a bit over a week, with over 50hrs in the game already, and most importantly to say thank you to a community that is a nice light in the darkness of the world today. I know there are of course baddies somewhere, every community has them, but I am very grateful for having yet to encounter any in my travels with the game so far.
