I know that's a bit of a scandalous topic title but as I continue to make my way through Shadowbringers, I can't help but continue to be blown away by the story.
Emet-Selch is such an amazingly written character that you actually feel bad for him. I mean...you feel bad for the big bad guy since ARR (not explicitly him but all Ascians) as he shows the "history" (depending on what side you believe) of the Zodiark and his people. When you're able to feel compassion and no longer loathing for a villain, that's nothing short of amazing writing.
On the other hand you have Vauthry, who is so repugnant with his god complex that you can't wait to fight him and take him down. He is objectively bad and there are no qualms about it. The game manages to make the characters stretch the spectrum of what is good and evil; with your character taking on the mantle of the anti-hero; doing what's for the greater good while destroying/changing the society and status quo of many of its civilians in the process.
I know I'm gushing here, but I'm just utterly blown away by FFXIV's story in Shadowbringers, especially after the good that was HW and the "eh" that was Stormblood.
That's not even mentioning the music in the expansion. Oh man...I've had that theme on repeat several times during house/yard work and other tasks. Just sooooo good. I know I'm only working through 5.0 and still have much to experience but man; color me impressed.
