I'm sure this isn't anything new on this sub but lately it really hit me just how underwhelming the open world content is in this game. Ever since the Make It Rain event started last month, I've been idling in the Gold Sauce in between queues for whatever it is I'm doing, whether that be daily roulette, raids, or whatever, and that make me realize just how instance heavy this game is. Other than a few activities you can do like beast tribe dailies, fates, gathering and the occasional hunt trains, there's no reason why you would ever leave town to do anything and I think that's honestly so sad. Even the stuff I just mentioned, there are instance based counterparts that's just better or rather more efficient than the open world stuff. There's the diadem where you can level gatherers and fates are simply not good for exp and if I'm being honest, is boring. The same goes for hunt trains because of the hunt discord, people just gather up in masses and it just becomes a "go from point A to point B to point C" kind of activity than anything. Even the new bojza front content, as fun as it was when it came out, is still an instance. I can see a lot of pros in instances, mainly convenience, but the problem with that is it arbitrarily makes the game world feel small.
The other day I tried WoW for the first time and even though I'm only 2 hours into the game but man is it fun. Maybe it's because it's new but regardless, the 1 thing that really felt different about WoW compared to this game is the open world. Something about WoW just felt grande that I can't quite describe. This might seem like a small detail but in the first area of the game right after you get off the tutorial ship, there are parts of the map where you can take tiny shortcuts by either jumping off cliffs or running through what seem like barriers that's meant to make players go around. In FF14 the game won't let you do things like that because they put invisible barriers in places they don't want you to go to. For example in Coerthas Central Highlands in Natalan, there are wooden fences that look like you can jump over but can't and stuff like this makes the game feel less open world than it should be. I've also found myself wandering off and exploring the map in WoW, something I've never done in FF14. Unless I have a quest or something specific to do, I'll never wander off in this game, not even an urge to explore. Maybe endgame WoW is the same and I just haven't gotten there yet but even the early game experience in WoW felt more fun than FF14.
Killing monsters in open world in FF14 also feels like a chore than it is fun. You can't say grab like 30 monsters and nuke them down in seconds. The game almost feels "too balanced" to the point where they sacrifice fun just to keep things balanced. You never truly feel op in this game unless you're doing unsynced content or run around in ARR zones but there's no reason for you to be doing that. It's not satisfying going around killing things and there's also no incentive to do so.
I don't know what SE can do to make open world more fun and I have no ideas in mind but as of right now, the open world content in this game is super lacking and I wish it wasn't. 1 of my favorite things to do in MMOs is to just go around killing shit in cool looking areas for loot or exp but in this game there's none of that. Everything is quest and instance oriented. Once you finish the MSQ, most of the game's world is obsolete which is really a shame.
This isn't a hate post on this game or a WoW > FF14 post, the reason I wrote this is because I like this game and wish there were more open world stuff to do. Agree or disagree, I just wanted to share my thoughts. Thanks for reading this far!
