This post is written on two assumptions,

  1. Hythlodeaus is not fully sentient
  2. We are azem, as hinted by the story

The reason that I have to base this on these two assumption is because

  1. By acknowledging that hythlodeaus is not fully sentient, we know he is but another pawn in emet selch's grand scheme. As he said in his last sentence to us, that he doesn't whether him giving us the star shard is a part of his recreator's intent or his own thoughts. This means that the entirety of our time in amaourot and more has been set up long long ago before we realized it.
  2. We are Azem, the fourteenth member of the convocation, this assumption exists as an extension of the earlier assumption, Hythlodeaus states that the star piece has been created by a friend, and it is now where it rightfully belongs, in our hand. Emet wants us to know this.

What does this mean?

Not only are we Emet selch's friend, we are a friend so close that Emet selch has created the final star piece and has been holding onto it for us ever since the sundering.

We left the convocation at the end which is why we never got to see the final piece handed to us, the counter group, venat and pals wanted to rely on us to summon hydaelyn, but we followed neither the convocation nor the counter group.

Emet selch has been waiting for a really long time to finally give us the star piece. He never forgot, which explains why he was so shocked to see us in our amaroutine form when we fought him as hades. He thought he has lost his best friend to the sundering and has only now confirmed that his best friend is alive and well.

I believe that this fact is why he decided to give us the chance to take over his legacy and to remember amarout and his people.

He has been plotting and playing with the possibility that we are Azem ever since the restoration of the lift in eulmore and it was most likely then that he started to recreate amarout as it is in anticipation for our arrival.

He was really never dealt a single losing hand. We've been playing in his palms from the very start. (genius bastard)

Should he fight and win over us and we would return as Azem, he gains an ally and his plans would succeed and the world would return to zodiark, however should he fight and lose, it would mean that regardless of his death, the legacy of the old world has already been immortalized in us. The final member of the convocation. The true last amaroutine. Either way is win win for him which is why he chose to go along with this risk and fought it all instead of retreat back to the shadows and waiting for other worlds to flood. No matter the outcome, he wins. His duty would be fulfilled.

Us winning against him triggered his second plan to give us the final star piece and planted the final bits of his influence into the star piece, resulting in his appearance in the warrior of light fight.

When he said he'll have us take over his legacy, he really meant it, he really meant that he wants us to end the plan to return the world to zodiark, to end edilidibus's eternal torment.

The fourteen start pieces contains the residue of each of the convocation's magics. Emet's selch's magic I believe is the freezing of time. Not as in a time stop but to create a bubble of time that loops itself. A frozen moment in time that never ends. Which explains why he is able to appear in the fight as well as how the crystal was thrown back at us at the very end at the crystal tower.

He is watching us. He never left. In that crystal lingers his time magic that allows his form to persist one last time and stay with us, not just in spirit. His final gift to the one friend he has been waiting for ever since the sundering. An eternal companion until the end of time itself.
